IF MY GRANDMOTHER DOESN’T stop talking for at least thirty consecutive seconds, I think I might scream. From the moment she saw me, she’s been droning on and on. Moving from one pointless topic to the next. So far she’s covered the short notice fiasco of this wedding, her disapproval of the groom and the inexplicable desire she has for my mother to wear her wedding gown from when she married my grandfather. Never going to happen, by the way, but I’ll let my mom tell her that. No need to steal her thunder on this one. Plus, I’ve had plenty to say on my grandmother’s most favorite topic thus far. Landon McCallum. The boy she handpicked for me a million years ago to escort me to my senior prom when I was perfectly content with skipping the event all together.

Much to my annoyance, Landon and I had actually gotten along. And even now, I can’t deny he’s easy on the eyes. Or how easy things were when we were together. Where Josi was always the solid choice, and Cole the reckless one, Landon was the one that always made the most sense. Something I’m reminded of repeatedly via my grandmother as she goes on about my botched acceptance of his marriage proposal. Not that I need reminding. I spent months after, wondering if I’d made the biggest mistake of my life saying no. Of course, I hadn’t expected it to be an all in or all out sort of thing. I’d wanted us to just stay how we were. Landon hadn’t been on board with that. It was either move forward together or move on apart. So, we’d moved on. Or so I’d thought. His being here now, did sort of contradict that.

“You know, I think he might ask again. If you just give him a chance.” Grandma Trudy is nudging me in the side in a way I would think was playful but in reality hurts quite a lot.

“Grandma, don’t say that. We haven’t even spoken in a year. Besides, I really hurt him when I said no.” I start walking toward the kitchen door hoping she won’t follow me back out into the living room, or at the very least will change the topic of conversation considering everyone is still gathered in the room together waiting for...frankly, I don’t know what they’re waiting for. Right now I’m just hoping my mom and Barret get home soon so I don’t have to keep hanging around to find out.

“Yes, well saying no to Landon McCallum really wasn’t the smartest thing you ever did,” she hisses, hot on my heels. “And it better not happen a second time. You have no idea how hard it was to get him to agree to come here for the wedding.”

In an instant I’ve come to a complete stop and am spun back around to take her full on. I’d like to tackle her. Body slam her into the ground. But she’s my grandma and I have to remind myself that beneath all of that obnoxious bossiness is a meek old woman.
